COLORADO/UTAH HIGH ADVENTURE |
|
From July 24 through August 8, Troop 202 went on a high adventure trip during which we backpacked in the Lizard Head Wilderness of Colorado and rafted down the Utah's San Juan River. We began by flying to Albuquerque, New Mexico and drove to the southwestern Rockies of Colorado near Durango. We spent our first full day there preparing for the trek. The next day we divided up into two crews, one crew beginning its trek in the north and the other in the south. Several days later our two crews met for a layover day at Navajo Lake, situated at an elevation of 11,200 feet. From there the crews exchanged car keys and each hiked to the trailhead where the other crew began. On the seventh day both crews met in Cortez, Colorado and had a big Mexican dinner. The next day we went to Moab, Utah to visit Arches National Park, where we hiked to the famous Delicate Arch and back. The following day we drove to Bluff, Utah where we met the rafting company and began our three day trip down the San Juan River. We had a great time navigating rapids, visiting Anasazi ruins, conducting numerous water fights, and watching desert wildlife. We even rode out a river gale and a night-time rain storm in the desert. After rafting, we stopped by the Four Corners Monument, the Taos Pueblo, and Santa Fe, New Mexico before flying home.
