COLORADO RIVER/SOUTHWEST HIGH ADVENTURE |
|
From July 19 through August 1, 2008, Troop 202 sent 16 scouts and adult leaders on a High Adventure Trek to the Colorado River and the Southwest. Flying to Salt Lake and Albuquerque, we met at Moab, Utah for a day of preparation. The next day we were dropped off at Corn Lake east of Grand Junction, Colorado where we divided into two crews, the "Water Bears" and the "Moose Police". The first day we canoed 20 miles to a state park near Fruita. After an eventful evening recovering a tent that blew into a lake, we continued on to the Loma boat ramp. Camping at Bull Canyon, Cottonwood, and Mee Canyon, we met up again at Black Rocks where we enjoyed a climb up a cliff face and jumping off Black Rocks. We continued on to a former Chinese railroad camp and ended up at Westwater where we met the rafts. The first day of rafting was an easy ride down a calm section of the river. We took a short side hike to an old miner's shack and then arrived at our campsite. Later that afternoon we took a longer hike up to a cliff face where we got to see some ancient petroglyphs. That evening we slept out under the stars. The next day we hit the whitewater in Marble Canyon and Last Chance Rapids. Later that day we came off the river to a well deserved dinner in Moab. The next day the whole group toured Arches National Park near Moab. Then a smaller group drove back to Salt Lake to fly home while the rest countinued on an extended tour, first going to Canyonlands National Park. After Canyonlands we visited Mesa Verde and then drove on to tour the Taos Pueblo in New Mexico. We then went on to Santa Fe where we had a great dinner, visited the Scoutmaster's land, saw an art Gallery where the Scoutmaster's wife was having an exhibition, and toured downtown Santa Fe. Later that afternoon we drove to Albuquerque to fly back to Oakland.
