Hawk Ridge (Chabot Regional Park), December 2001 |
Our three mile hike stretched into a five miler from Bort Meadows to Hawk Ridge, despite the driving rain and muddy trails. The youngest scouts hiked well, and we arrived at camp after noon. The Hawk Ridge campsite had a wooden pavilion with a cement floor and fire pit, so we were able to start a good fire and dry (or maybe smoke) shoes and clothes. During the afternoon, the kids played an "active" game of charades, a funny game of telephone (where the message mutates as if is whispered from ear to ear around a circle), and practiced skits (including some odd political commentary) given later that evening by the two patrols. Dinner was successful, hot, and filling; desert - peach cobbler - was a standout. The kids played capture the flag in a dark grove of eucalyptus trees across the field, and, after "thorns & roses," we settled into bed under the pavilion's wooden - but leaky - roof. During the night, the "great storm" blew through, but we stayed dry and warm. Hawk Ridge is a great group campsite; perhaps someday we can camp there
